Hydrogen Sulphide Analyzers (H2s) Safety

Introduction

The course presents the physical properties and health hazards of H2S, how to protect oneself, and basic rescue techniques. Each student is required to operate a self-contained breathing apparatus, a detector tube device, and participate in CPR and rescue lift and drag exercises.

Objectives

    To prepare the individual for the hazards associated with working around H2S and how to protect oneself in an H2S environment.

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies, and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations. The online course is conducted online using MS-Teams/ClickMeeting.

Who Should Attend?

This short course is intended for all personnel assigned to an Oil & Gas facilities where gas may be present.

Course Outline

Day 1: H2S Properties & Initial Response Strategy

  • Identify six properties of H2S
  • Identify probable locations of H2S
  • Describe scales for measuring H2S
  • Recall worker exposure limits for H2S
  • Describe the health effects of H2S exposure
  • Apply the Initial Response Strategy to a case study

Day 2: Respiratory Protective Equipment

  • Identify four major components of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
  • Identify two components of Supplied Air Breathing Apparatus (SABA) that are different from SCBA
  • Demonstrate pre-use inspection of SCBA
  • Demonstrate operation of SCBA

Day 3: Detection of H2S

  • Describe the use and limitations of detector tubes
  • Identify major components of detector tube devices
  • Demonstrate pre-use inspection and operation of detector tube devices
  • Identify major components of personal H2S monitors

Day 4: Rescue Techniques and CPR

  • Describe four rescue techniques
  • Demonstrate four rescue techniques
  • Describe the CPR technique
  • Demonstrate the CPR technique

Day 5: Review & Case Studies

  • Recall the seven-step Initial Response Strategy
  • Apply the Initial Response Strategy to a given case study
